THE BASICS

The Layman Group is a nonprofit Arts organization. We work in all mediums of Art. We are dedicated to expanding the scope of appreciation and advocacy for the Arts, the incubation and support of artists' careers, promoting thought provoking artistic dialogue, dynamic arts education, and the development of both classical and novel productions and projects - all for our beautiful state of Alabama.

HOW TLG BEGAN

The Layman Group is the brainchild of Founder & Executive Artistic Director, Doc Waller. While in NYC working as a stage actor, Doc contemplated the necessity of his exodus from his beloved state, and how the tone of the Arts in Alabama may be affecting other artists like him. This question led to a broader interest in investing his time and energy into developing an organization that both supported other artists, but also worked to develop Alabama communites as advocating, accustomed, nourishing environments for the Arts as a whole. Thus, in 2005, Doc returned home to plant the seeds of TLG.

MISSION & PHILOSOPHY

The Layman Group stands to champion the emergence of the Arts and Creativity as essential ingredients of life.

We believe art is constantly running away from us. We will never catch up to it; we will never perfect it. In fact, we have no desire to. The more we work in Art, the more we have to learn about it. This alone keeps us happy and inspired.

As an organization, we approach our work with open arms and an open mind. In this approach, we choose not to discrimate against any person, group, or particular subject matter based on race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender, creed, or economic status.
